The HW Criterion

*** Click here to continue right to registration at Joy of Tournaments.***

*NOTE: the registration deadline is October 15 at 5:00pm.*

On behalf of the Harvard-Westlake community & debate team, I would like to cordially invite your team to the inaugural Harvard-Westlake Criterion. The tournament will be held on October 20-21, 2007 on the beautiful campus of the Harvard-Westlake Upper School - located in the hills over-looking Studio City, California.

This year we will offer three events of debate competition - Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate and Parliamentary Debate. All events will have a Varsity and Novice Division. The Novice Division is reserved for debaters who are in their FIRST YEAR of debate only.

Harvard-Westlake has a long tradition of excellence in debate. We hope to restart this tradition by offering the community a premiere, high school run tournament for the first semester in Southern California.

On behalf of the Harvard-Westlake Debate Team and the entire Harvard-Westlake community, we hope to see you here!

Sincerely,

Mike Bietz - Director of Debate

Jacob Levi - Assistant Debate Coach

Sean Nadel - HW Debate Captain

Tournament Fees
Compared to other invitational tournaments, Harvard-Westlake offers extremely reasonable fees for the number of rounds of competition. There is a standard school fee of 25.00.

*Checks should be made out to Harvard-Westlake School

Entries
Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate: 35.00 per entry
Varsity & Novice Public Forum, Varsity & Novice Parliamentary & Novice LD: 15.00 per entry

Drop fees will go in effect beginning on October 12.

Judges
As any who has run a tournament can attest to, tournaments RARELY run late because of students or because of the tabroom. The largest causes of tournament delays is inadequate judging coverage and judges being late for rounds or turning in their ballots.

To run efficiently and on-schedule, schools are asked to bring sufficient judges to cover their entry. This ratio is:
LD Debate: 1 judge for 3 entries or fraction thereof
* Judges in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate are asked to be experienced LD judges.
Parliamentary/Public Forum: 1 judge for 2 entries or fraction thereof

*Judges MAY NOT cover judges in different events of debate.

*Bringing a judge means your judge is available to judge ALL ROUNDS. If your judge leaves early or fails to pick up an assigned ballot, you will be charged.

If you need to hire judges, you MUST let the tournament know by FRIDAY OCTOBER 12! Failure to bring sufficient judges will result in your entries being dropped from the tournament without refund.

The rate to hire judges is 50.00 per uncovered entry per day. This means, if you bring 3 LD entries but ZERO judges, you will be charged 150.00. If you are bringing 4 LD entries and 1 judge, you will be charged 50.00 per day. Use the following charts:

Lincoln Douglas Judge Requirements
1 Entry: 1 Judge
2 Entries 1 Judge
3 Entries: 1 Judge
4 Entries: 2 Judges
5 Entries: 2 Judges
6 Entries: 2 Judges
7 Entries: 3 Judges

Public Forum and Parliamentary Judge Requirements

2 Entries: 1 Judge
3 Entries: 2 Judges
4 Entries: 2 Judges
5 Entries: 3 Judges
6 Entries: 3 Judges
7 Entries: 4 Judges
